Kerala Return Migration from Gulf Shows Steady Rise Among Older Workers

A gradual increase in return migration from the Middle East to Kerala is being observed, particularly among ageing expatriate workers. Officials tracking migration trends say many long-term residents of the Gulf are choosing to return home due to health concerns, job insecurity, and changing labour policies in host countries.

Kerala has historically sent large numbers of workers to the Gulf, especially to the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia. While younger migrants continue to seek overseas opportunities, older workers often find it difficult to adapt to evolving skill requirements and nationalisation policies.

State agencies in Kerala have introduced reintegration schemes aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship and self-employment among returnees. Some former expatriates have successfully invested their savings in small businesses, while others struggle to adjust to lower income levels after years of Gulf employment.

Economists warn that return migration highlights the urgency of creating sustainable jobs within Kerala. They argue that the skills, experience and global exposure of Gulf returnees could be better utilised through targeted support and investment planning.
