Remittance Flows from Gulf to Kerala Show Signs of Stabilisation

Remittances from Keralites working in the Middle East appear to have stabilised after periods of uncertainty caused by global economic pressures. Financial analysts say steady employment levels in the Gulf, particularly in services and healthcare, have helped maintain consistent money transfers to households in Kerala.

Families across the state continue to depend on income sent from countries such as the Qatar, Oman and the UAE. These funds are widely used for education, housing, healthcare and loan repayments, reinforcing the Gulf’s long-standing role in Kerala’s household economy.

Banking officials note a gradual shift toward digital remittance platforms, reducing transaction costs and improving transfer speed. However, rising living expenses in host countries have limited the ability of some workers to increase savings.

Economists caution that while remittances remain strong, Kerala must channel them into productive investments. Overdependence on overseas income, they warn, leaves the state vulnerable to external economic and policy shocks.
