Muscat, Oman
MUSCAT – In the high-stakes world of Gulf commerce, success is often measured in skyscrapers and balance sheets. But for Shihab Kauson, the Chairman of the Hala Group, the true measure of a man’s victory lies in the depth of the crisis he has overcome. Today, the Hala Group stands as a diversified titan in the Sultanate, but its foundations were laid not with capital, but with the sweat of a young man who once walked the streets of Muscat selling peanuts to survive.

A Heritage Lost and Found
The story began in Chengala, Kannur, where Shihab Kauson’s family once held 18 acres of ancestral land. In a cruel twist of fate, legal disputes and mismanagement saw that heritage slip away, leaving a young Shihab Kauson and his nine siblings in the shadow of poverty.
“Opportunities are often missed because they come dressed in overalls and look like work,” Shihab Kauson reflects, quoting Edison. Following the untimely passing of his father, Abdul Khader, Shihab Kauson migrated to Oman as a teenager. He arrived not with a business plan, but with the heavy responsibility of supporting a mother and eight sisters.

The ‘Popcorn’ Path to an Empire
Shihab Kauson’s early years in Muscat were a masterclass in resilience. Starting as a domestic help, he quickly realized that a fixed salary would never be enough to reclaim his family’s lost honor. During the Muscat Festival, he turned to the streets, walking upwards of 10 kilometers daily to sell popcorn and peanuts.
These were the “nightmare years,” as he describes them—nights spent sleeping in the corners of mosques or under the open sky when he couldn’t afford rent. Yet, even then, Shihab Kauson maintained a discipline that would define his future: for every small profit made, he set aside a portion for charity.

A Diversified Portfolio of Excellence
The transition from street vendor to corporate leader was fueled by a “never-say-die” attitude. Today, the Hala Group is a household name in Oman, spanning a vast and growing portfolio under the guidance of Shihab Kauson:
- Retail & Logistics: Comprising the renowned Hala Shopping Centres and Hala Hypermarkets the group provides essential goods and global brands to the local community.
- Healthcare: The Hala Medical Centre, which recently received accolades from the Omani Ministry of Health, serves as a beacon of accessible and high-quality medical care.
- Telecommunications: Hala Phone, leading the market as premier wholesale and retail outlets for mobile technology.
- Real Estate: The Kauson Group, managing significant and strategic property interests in Ruwi and across the Sultanate.

Hala Hypermarket: Redefining the Retail Experience
A cornerstone of the Group’s retail success, Hala Hypermarket has revolutionized the shopping experience for thousands in Muscat. Under the leadership of Shihab Kauson, the chain has become synonymous with quality and trust. Known for its “Customer First” philosophy, Hala Hypermarket provides a vast range of international products at competitive prices, serving as a primary hub for both the expatriate community and locals. Its rapid expansion across the Sultanate reflects its status as a market leader in the retail sector.

Hala Medical Center: A Beacon of Accessible Healthcare
More than just a business enterprise, Hala Medical Center represents Shihab Kauson’s deep-rooted commitment to the well-being of the community. Recently receiving high accolades from the Omani Ministry of Health, the center provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities. By ensuring that high-quality healthcare is accessible and affordable to all, the center has become a vital asset to the Muscat healthcare landscape, combining modern medical technology with compassionate care.

Star Power in Ruwi: Asif Ali Inaugurates Hala Cafe’s Newest Chapter
The bustling heart of Ruwi witnessed a cinematic spectacle this week as South Indian superstar Mr. Asif Ali arrived to officially inaugurate the latest flagship outlet of Hala Cafe. The event, which drew thousands of fans and local dignitaries, marked a significant milestone in the Hala Group’s hospitality expansion.

Culinary Excellence in the Heart of Muscat
Hala Cafe, Ruwi, is designed to be more than just a coffee shop. It serves as a cultural crossroads where traditional Omani hospitality meets contemporary international flavors.
A Legacy of Compassion
Despite his ascent to the upper echelons of Omani business, Shihab Kauson remains grounded in his roots. Through the Kauson Charitable Trust, he has spearheaded many initiatives. He credits his mother, Ayesha, and his wife, Anisa, as the pillars of his success.
“My father lost everything so that I could learn the value of earning it back,” Shihab Kauson says. His story is more than a business success; it is a beacon for the thousands of expatriates who land on Omani shores with nothing but a dream.
As the Hala Group continues to expand, Shihab Kauson remains a testament to the fact that while land and wealth can be taken away, a man’s determination is a territory that no one can conquer.
