Increased Gulf Flight Services Strengthen Kerala’s Expat and Tourism Links

Air connectivity between Kerala and the Middle East has received a boost with airlines expanding services to key Gulf destinations. New and increased frequencies from airports such as Kozhikode and Kochi are aimed at meeting sustained demand from expatriate workers, students, and family travellers.

Airline officials say the decision reflects the consistent passenger flow between Kerala and countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, home to millions of Malayalis. Direct routes reduce travel time and costs, making frequent visits more feasible for families divided between regions.

Tourism stakeholders in Kerala believe enhanced connectivity could also attract more Gulf tourists seeking short-haul leisure and wellness travel. The state’s ayurveda centres, hill stations and backwater resorts remain popular among visitors from the Middle East, particularly during school holidays.

However, travel agents caution that seasonal fare spikes continue to be a concern for low- and middle-income expatriates. They urge regulators and airlines to ensure affordable pricing, given that air travel remains a lifeline rather than a luxury for many Kerala–Gulf families.
